Brimming with
the holiday spirit, a 2004 customer at a California Post Office wished
the counter clerk a "Merry Christmas." The employee responded
apologetically that an over-zealous officialdom had forbidden his use
of the greeting.
Contrary to the
legal theory pushed by some, the US Constitution does not demand a
secular government, hostile to religion. Rather, the First Amendment
guarantees a balanced legal neutrality by preventing religious
"establishment" and concurrently protecting its "free exercise."
Serious
antagonists seeking to ban God from the legal system face an
intimidating task! Recent research of William J. Federer1
confirms that the all fifty states express gratitude to God in their
constitutions, typically in the preambles.
